Highlights of 80th Golden Globes

The 80th Golden Globes came and went and it was a night filled with twists and turns. After not holding the televised award ceremony in 2022 due to controversy with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the award show returned. Here is a recap of the 2023 Golden Globes from big wins, speeches, and much more.

80th Golden Globes includes big wins for Abbott Elementary andThe Fabelmans 

The cable sitcom, Abbott Elementary, took home the award for Best Television series Musical or Comedy. When accepting the award, creator and star of the series, Quinta Brunson, shared “I created this show because I love comedy. There are so many people in this room who are the reason why I’m here.” She went on to mention trailblazers like Henry WinklerBob Odenkirk, and Seth RoganBrunson also won the award for Best TV Actress in a Musical or Comedy with her co-star Tyler James Williams winning Best Supporting Actor.

Other big awards of the night included The Fabelmans winning Best Movie Drama and The Banshees of Inisherin winning Best Movie Comedy or Musical.

The White Lotus cast and creative get into more shenanigans at the 80th Golden Globes

The White Lotus won big, with Jennifer Coolidge receiving the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Limited Series and the show itself winning for Best Limited Series. When giving her speech Coolidge did not shy away from her funny and quirky personality, giving love to creator Mike White for giving her the role. She also made sure to add some expletives in her speech.

When Mike White accepted the award for Best Limited Series, he jokingly admitted he was too drunk. “I was gonna give the speech in Italian but I was too drunk, because there was no food!” he said.

Ke Huy Quan Wins Best Supporting Actor for Everything, Everywhere All At Once

Ke Huy Quan became the first actor in 40 years of Asian descent to win the award for Best Supporting Actor in A Motion Picture. He received the award for his portrayal of laundromat owner and husband Waymond Wang.

In his speech, Quan thanked his roots. He also shared his true love of Hollywood, even when it didn’t love him back at points.

“When I started my career as a child actor in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,’ I felt so very lucky to have been chosen. As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer. No matter what I did, I would never surpass what I achieved as a kid. Thankfully, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid, and they gave me an opportunity to try again.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy makes a virtual speech at 80th Golden Globes 

Hollywood made the honest connection between art and social justice as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared in a video during the award ceremony.

“There are still battles and tears ahead,” he said. “But now I can tell you who was the best in the previous year – you in the free world, who united around support of free Ukrainian people.”

Eddie Murphy accepts the Cecil B. DeMille Award with a Will Smith Oscars joke

Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy received the honorable Cecil B. DeMille award. Being 41 years in the business, Murphy shared some insight about how he’s been successful.

“I wanna let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind,” Murphy shared with the crowd. “It’s very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business — and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f—ing mouth!”

This comes after the slap scandal at the 2022 Oscars. Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair.
