Broadway is back and better than ever. Since the first shows returned to the stage in NYC last year, theatergoers have flocked to theaters to reconnect with their favorite stories, songs, and performers. We saw long-running favorites like Hamilton, Wicked, and Chicago start-up performances once again.

Broadway show vaccine requirements and mask mandate

Broadway.com reports that all Broadway Theatres are adopting a “mask optional” policy for the month of July. They will monitor and reassess in the middle of July.

Read specific theaters’ policies in regards to proof of vaccination.

Broadway shows to see right now: Hamilton

Hamilton, one of the most popular shows in Broadway history, re-opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on West 46th Street on Tuesday, September 14. The sung-and-rapped-through musical, which covers Alexander Hamilton’s life through the American Revolution and the country’s earliest years.

Broadway shows to see right now: Wicked

On the same day Hamilton reopened, Wicked returned to the Gershwin Theatre on West 51st Street where it’s run since 2003. Theatergoers can see the story of Glinda and Elphaba, which has grown into Broadway’s fifth-longest-running production, several nights a week with regular matinee performances.

Broadway shows to see right now: Chicago

Chicago in New York? Sure, why not? The second longest-running musical in Broadway history (it trails only The Phantom of the Opera) is currently playing at the Ambassador Theatre on West 49th Street. Angelica Ross makes her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart with Amra-Fayne Wright as Velma and Brandon Victor Dixon as Billy Flynn.

Broadway shows to see right now: The Phantom of the Opera

Speak of the devil (or, uh, phantom), The Phantom of the Opera resumed performances at the Majestic Theatre on West 44th Street on Friday, October 22. Fans can purchase tickets for performances through March 6, 2022, and catch Broadway’s longest-running show, which centers around the exploits of soprano Christine Daaé and a mysterious masked man who lives underneath the Paris Opéra House. 

The show announced that after 35 years, it will have its final performance on Broadway on February 18, 2023.

Broadway shows to see right now: Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Moulin Rouge! The Musical can be found at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on West 4th Street. The show, which has run on Broadway since November 2018, reopened on Friday, September 24. The jukebox musical now stars Ashley Loren as Satine and Derek Klena as Christian, who fall in love in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris at the dawn of the 20th century. Moulin Rouge is an adaptation of the 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann and features popular contemporary songs rearranged to fit its setting.

Broadway shows to see right now: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Return to Hogwarts with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, an inventive play that picks up the Wizarding World’s story 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The play reopened at the Lyric Theatre in Times Square on Friday, November 12. The current Broadway version of the show has been condensed into a 1-part performance, which differs slightly from the 2-night original version of the show that fans in London can still catch in the West End.

Broadway shows to see right now: The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon returned to the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on West 49th Street on Friday, November 5. The hit musical, which was written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, has been satirizing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 2011.

Broadway shows to see right now: Hadestown

Greek mythology fans can travel to the underworld with Orpheus in Hadestown, which won Best Musical and Best Original Score at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown plays at the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th Street and was one of the first Broadway shows to return when it reopened in September 2021. The musical, which features music from singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, combines the classic Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone.

Broadway shows to see right now: The Music Man

The revival of the classic musical The Music Man was supposed to premiere in 2020 but due to the pandemic it only just opened on Broadway. You can currently see everyone’s favorite showman Hugh Jackman as con artist Harold Hill and Broadway (and TV!) darling Sutton Foster as the lovely Marian the Librarian in 8 shows a week at the Winter Garden Theatre.

Broadway shows to see right now: Six

Six took the West End by storm when it opened in 2019. A retelling of the story of Henry VIII’s 6 wives, this pop concert-esque show is now running on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Like it was in London, it’s currently a hot ticket so be sure to get your seats early. If you can’t make it to the theater, check out Six’s music so you can sing along at home to the catchy tunes.

Broadway shows to see right now: The Lion King

See another Disney movie come alive with The Lion King on Broadway. Following the plot of the film, the show focuses on Simba, a young cub who earns the title of the king of the pride lands. When his evil uncle wrongly blames Simba for his death, he runs away and meets a meerkat named Timone and a warthog named Pumba.

Broadway shows out now right now: MJ The Musical

Michael Jackson’s life transforms on the Broadway stage in MJ The Musical. The show follows Michael behind the scenes as he prepares for his 1992 Dangerous World Tour. Throughout the musical, audiences will see moments from his life that transformed his career. Myles Frost stars as MJ while Christian Wilson and Tavonn Olds-Sample play younger versions of the superstar. MJ will have you singing and dancing, featuring over 25 songs from Michael Jackson’s career.

Broadway shows to see right now: Aladdin

The Disney musical, Aladdin, continues on the Broadway stage. Like the movie, the musical tells the story of a poor young man who is granted 3 wishes by a genie in a lamp. When he decides to use the wishes to woo Princess Jasmine, chaos ensues. Audiences can bop along to the songs that include hits like “Friend Like Me,” and ballads like “A Whole New World.”

Broadway shows to see right now: Funny Girl

Beanie Feldstein stars as Broadway actress Fanny Brice in the revival of Funny Girl. In the musical that made Barbra Streisand a Broadway legend, Funny Girl follows the autobiographical story of Fanny Brice and her tumultuous relationship with gambling husband Nicky Arnstein. The cast also features Ramin Karimloo, Jane Lynch, and Jared Grimes. You’ll hear classics like “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and “I’m The Greatest Star.”

Beanie Feldstein announced via Instagram that her last performance will be on July 31. Glee star Lea Michele will step into the role of Fanny Brice on September 6. Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh will be taking over for Jane Lynch as Mrs. Brice also on September 6.

Broadway shows to see right now: Beetlejuice

The thrilling musical Beetlejuice returns to Broadway with previews starting on April 8, 2022. Based on Tim Burton’s 1988 film, the musical follows a strange teenager who meets a recently deceased couple and a demon who is up to no good. The original Broadway Beetlejuice, Alex Brightman, makes his return as the haunting and hilarious title character.

Jesse WilliamsJess Tyler Ferguson, and Patrick J. Adams star in the revival of Take Me Out on Broadway. The show follows Darren Lemming, a center fielder for the Empires baseball team, who reveals he is gay. A Strange Loop is a new musical debuting on the Broadway stage. The show follows a Black queer writer writing a musical about a Black queer writer who is writing a musical about a Black queer writer. The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical was written by Michael R. Broadway shows to see right now: Come From Away

Come From Away depicts the story of thousands of airplane passengers who took refuge in a small town in Newfoundland, Canada when terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 grounded flights around the country. A performance of the Broadway stage show was filmed in May 2021 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre while live performances were still on hiatus. The performance was released on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 10.
